Michael Jabot of SUNY Fredonia will establish a network of 12 schools in the Lake Erie area with grant funding for a digital max/min thermometer and a rain gauge for each school. Instrument shelters and other materials need for instrument installation will be arranged by the grantee. Students will be engaged in studying questions relating to climate and lake effect snow. Measurements will be taken following GLOBE protocols and all data will be reported to GLOBE. Teacher training and follow-on support will be provided by the grantee. Evaluation will in part be through anticipated student submission of research projects to the GLOBE Virtual Student Research Conference.

ABOUT YLACES

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
