Kenyan Participation in GLOBE El Niño Campaign

Schools in Kenya are participating in the TAHMO initiative with the installation of 28 automated weather stations and data reporting to the GLOBE Program. With this grant YLACES will supply equipment for 5 schools to participate in the GLOBE El Niño Campaign by taking surface soil moisture and soil temperature measurements. The soil moisture measurements will expand the range of schools that provide observations  in support of NASA’s SMAP mission. A sixth set of equipment will be supplied to support protocol training  by GLOBE Kenya.Students will compare  the soil data with the data  from collocated weather stations.

ABOUT YLACES

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
