WestEd/CCASN GLOBE Partnership

WestEd will work with five GLOBE schools and GLOBE Master Trainer Henry Ortiz of the Los Angeles Unified School District to students from ages 8-18 in the preparation of research projects. The intent of the research projects is to further scientific inquiry in the classroom, deepen environmental literacy skills, and promote data-based research and use of data visualization. The grant will fund the purchase of air monitoring sensors and data loggers that will be deployed at the schools. Two teachers from each school have been trained in using remote sensor data loggers for scientific data collection by students. These ten trained teachers will reach approximately 600 students (each year). Their students already engage in GLOBE data collection, but the use of data loggers will better support their science learning and support science inquiry. Students will engage in research projects and these may be submitted to GLOBE Student Science Symposia for evaluation and recognition.

WestEd/CCASN will take the lead in identifying participating teachers, distributing the equipment, and collecting documentation from the schools/teachers at the end of the school year. Henry Ortiz will provide technical support for the teachers.
