Shumate Middle School/Downriver STEM at Weiss

A WeatherSTEM/SkyWeather system (weather station) will be purchased and hosted at Downriver STEM at Weiss Elementary School in Woodhaven, Michigan. This system will be utilized by both the Shumate Middle School and Downriver STEM at Weiss Elementary (Gibraltar School District) learning communities. Grantee Jeff Bouwman will work with teachers at Downriver STEM at Weiss Elementary and assist them in becoming GLOBE certified. The weather system will be utilized by Weiss teachers to improve weather and climate instruction in the classroom. The new WeatherSTEM/SkyWeather station will also allow

Shumate GLOBE students to extend their research to include comparisons of weather variables at the two locations.

ABOUT YLACES

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
