Kenya GLOBE Post Plus

Kenya

Grant amount:

$5,000

The objectives of this activity are:

• Increase scientific collaboration amongst students in Kenya and provide Kenyan students the
opportunity to collaborate with other students/institutions worldwide that collect similar data,
deepening students’ exposure and the scientific knowledge of all parties;
• Further STEAM education through student collaboration with scientists and immersion in
citizen science in an informal setting, enabling students to proactively get engaged in issues affecting
their community; and
• Promote monitoring and identification of mosquito species that carry diseases such as Zika
virus and other vector-borne diseases; determine the distribution and prevalence of disease-carrying
mosquitoes across Kenya; and prepare reports to communities as risk of mosquito-borne diseases
with possible intervention recommendations.

The project will focus on GLOBE Hydrosphere (hydrology) and mosquito protocols. The grant will provide magnifying lenses for use with smart phones if photographing mosquito larvae; Vernier meters to observe water quality parameters, turbidity tubes for measuring water transparency, and required supplies. The grant will enable measurements to be taken by 5 participating schools and reported to the GLOBE Program and interested parties in the local and regional area. Students will analyze their data and compare them with data from other locations.
