This grant will provide macroinvertebrate sampling equipment and other supplies for 600 students in multiple schools to take samples from water bodies and examine the macroinvertebrates found as indicators of water quality. Harris Center teacher-naturalists will share the students’ findings with county conservation commissions at the completion of all classes. Students will develop charts, presentations, and/or artwork based on their study, and these will be shared with families and school communities.

ABOUT YLACES

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
