Down the Drain 2023

Grant amount:

$1,440

Utah

The Down the Drain project is planning on taking 10th grade chemistry students on a service learning adventure. The investigation will follow the impacts residents and businesses have on water that goes “Down the Drain” and into the Great Salt Lake. They will complete guided scientific research together as a class and then design and carry out their own, independent, research projects. This year the students will have the opportunity to work with a new stormwater cleaning system being tested in their school neighborhood. They will also have the opportunity to kayak on the Great Salt Lake and complete salinity field guides now that the water levels are temporarily back up. Results will be shared at the Great Salt Lake Citizen Symposium.  The Down the Drain program is seeking Mass Spectrometer use at the University of Utah, transportation, and lab supplies for students to complete their projects.
