The research project will be on soil contamination by heavy metals and pesticides in the Bade local government area of Yobe State, Nigeria. Twenty (20) from between the ages of 14- 18 years from secondary school are expected to participate in the project. Students they will do fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and reporting. The students will use equipment like Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), to analyze soil samples to determine levels of contaminant and their impact on soil health and crop yields. The results of the research will be shared through public platforms, a local student research symposium, and reports, this will encourage scientific literacy and community awareness. At the end of the project students are expected to be equipped with scientific research skills while providing important data to promote sustainable agricultural practices and ensure environmental and food safety.

ABOUT YLACES

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
