German International School

Grant amount:

$2,415

Beaverton, Oregon

We believe that by immersing students in the worlds of language and STEM, they will become creative, innovative, and thoughtful problem solvers who approach challenges from diverse perspectives. By using our immediate surroundings as a foundation for teaching and learning, and by asking students to act locally, they will begin to see the direct impact their efforts can have. Through place-based learning and by prioritizing an integrated, experiential approach, students will develop practical inquiry and communication skills, deepen their respect for the environment, and gain a strong sense of responsibility as contributing members of a community.  In order to align our practices with our vision, we would like to invest in some equipment to explore the use of alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. Our goal is to give students the opportunity to participate in hands-on, independent science research on an annual basis, each year increasing their level of understanding of scientific inquiry and how this relates to learning scientific concepts. We would like to purchase both solar energy kits to explore energy, temperature, and electrical circuits, as well as wind turbine kits for investigations. A scientific scale would also be beneficial for all research-related activities.
