St. Joseph, Michigan

8th grade students at Upton Middle School in St. Joseph, Michigan will be conducting a research project to prove whether or not the creek that runs behind Upton Middle School is a healthy habitat to release our Chinook salmon. 260 8th grade students at Upton Middle School have been raising Chinook salmon from November to May through the Michigan DNR Salmon in the Classroom Program. In May, students will use Pasco Water Quality sensors and a macroinvertebrate kit to collect data to prove whether or not our creek is a good location to release our salmon. Students will create digital presentations to document and present the results of their research projects

ABOUT YLACES

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
