Takshanuk Watershed Council

Grant amount:

$1,564.37

Haines, Klukwan, and Skagway, Alaska

Takshanuk Watershed Council’s (TWC) Stream Team project engages youth in Haines, Klukwan, and Skagway, Alaska in experiential science exploration through hands-on learning, scientific-inquiry, data sharing, and environmental research. Through our initiative, Stream Team participants will learn how to conduct water temperature, turbidity, and cloud cover measurements using GLOBE protocols. They will learn how to analyze the data to identify seasonal and annual trends and share the data through a public ArcGIS StoryMap. They will also explain their project and research on TWC’s weekly radio show, Watershed Weekly. Students will use the data to identify areas of concern in our local watersheds. They will work with TWC’s Science Director to explore solutions to combating these problems and learn more about TWC’s water temperature studies in the Greater Chilkat Watershed. This project will expose students to not only conducting environmental observations, but using those observations to analyze data, conduct research, and develop solutions to environmental problems in our region.
