University of Montevallo TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science Program

Grant amount:

$5,000

Montevallo, Alabama

We are requesting a grant of $5,000 from Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists (YLACES) to organize a student-centered SRS Symposium, benefiting more than 20 high school students from diverse backgrounds. This one-day event will feature student project presentations, interactive panel discussions, and hands-on activities focused on biological science, sustainable practices, and environmental advocacy.

The symposium aims to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to address environmental justice and food insecurity issues in their communities, fostering a generation of proactive environmental leaders.

To assess and report participant involvement and impact, we will keep detailed attendance records, analyze the number and quality of student projects, administer pre- and post-event surveys with participants, and conduct observations to gauge changes in knowledge and attitudes. Interim progress updates and a final comprehensive report, including qualitative feedback and visual data representations, will be submitted to YLACES. This symposium will provide students with invaluable insights and inspire them to take meaningful action towards a sustainable future.
