Cleveland Heights High School

Ohio

Grant amount:

$1,500

Students will engage in a hands-on environmental science project, conducting monthly water tests of their local watershed to investigate the impact of road salt on water and air quality. This project will provide valuable real-world learning experiences while addressing a critical environmental issue affecting the community. Students will explore how increased salt levels affect aquatic ecosystems, soil health, and air quality. This includes examining how salt aerosolizes and impacts air quality near roadways. Students will share their findings through the Friends of Doan Brook website (https://doanbrookpartnership.org/water-quality-monitoring/) to inform the community about water quality trends and environmental health. Based on their research, students will identify alternative de-icing methods and present their findings and recommendations to the Mayors of Cleveland Heights and University Heights.
