Santa Lucia School

California

Grant amount:

$1,500

This project will equip students with water quality testing kits, biodiversity survey supplies, and microscopes connected to Chromebooks, allowing them to conduct authentic scientific research at Paso Robles Creek, which runs through the school’s property. Additionally, the grant will help enhance the school’s Trout in the Classroom program by providing necessary aquarium equipment to raise trout while monitoring water quality and trout habitat. Students will also expand an ongoing wildlife monitoring program using trail cameras that have already identified a diverse range of species, including mountain lions, bobcats, and turkey vultures. Data collected will be shared through student-led presentations, educational signs along the creek, a school podcast, and public citizen science platforms like iNaturalist. This project will foster environmental stewardship by engaging students in real-world research and encouraging them to become solution-oriented, environmentally conscious community members.
