Tri-State Steelheaders

Washington

Grant amount:

$1,350

This grant will provide the opportunity for 715 students to measure water quality at different streams while releasing the salmon they raised throughout the year. Students will learn how to measure the water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH value of the stream while learning what these values mean. Students will also collect macroinvertebrates and learn to identify them to determine water quality. Students will then use these data next school year to determine whether the stream is a healthy habitat for salmon. They will also brainstorm ways that they can improve habitat quality for their specific release site. This research project will continue each May and will collect data to track the quality of streams in Southeastern Washington year-to-year.
