Dilla University

Ethiopia

Grant amount:

$1,500

This project, titled "Empowering Ethiopian Youth in Climate Change Monitoring Through Mathematics," seeks to engage junior students from Ethiopia’s highland and Rift Valley regions in meaningful environmental research. With ecosystems in these areas increasingly affected by climate change, the project aims to equip students with essential tools and skills to collect, analyze, and interpret climate-related data using mathematics. The initiative will enhance students’ understanding of environmental science while fostering critical analytical skills and a sense of responsibility as citizen scientists. The project will involve procuring low-cost scientific instruments, conducting training workshops for teachers and students, facilitating field data collection, and guiding students in analyzing and presenting their findings. Key activities include monitoring climate indicators such as temperature trends, rainfall variability, and CO2 levels. Findings will be shared through student presentations, promoting awareness and potential mitigation strategies within local communities. The project will run from March to December 2025, with a budget of $1,500 to cover instruments, workshops, transportation, and events. Outcomes include training at least 100 students, generating valuable climate data, and empowering youth to contribute to environmental solutions. By aligning with YLACES’ mission, this project leverages mathematics to advance climate change education and foster a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
