Girls Education for Climate Action (GECA)

$1,500

The grant will acquisition of scientific tools for environmental audit research by the primary and secondary students of age 12-18 years in Ifakara, Kilombero, Tanzania. The grant will benefit 110 students who will be the club members, but in a large school community, the grant will impact a community of 5000 pupils and students from engaged schools. The grant will enable students to engage in hands-on research activities on water, air, soil, and weather experiments, record and share the results locally with other students in their school community, with communities outside of the schools to ignite the understanding of the real-world situation for better management and conservation, and in a larger community through the GLOBE platform, making data available to all. Students will be assessed quarterly on what they have been doing through their activity showcasing, but daily monitoring data will show their daily activities, while the monthly visits to schools will give the picture on the trends of the activities at schools. The project aims to help students understand critical issues related to climate change and environmental conservation through practical learning and active participation and build future environmental conservationists.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
