Effingham County is in dire need to engage its students in robust environmental monitoring projects due to rapidly changing landscapes. With the addition of new logistics hubs and warehouses combined with a 2023 turpentine spill at a local plant, students have continued to express concerns about poor air quality impacting their lives both at school and at home. This $852 grant will support a 10th grade research project comparing the Air Quality Index (AQI) between the three county middle schools. Students will collaborate to compare air quality data and data being gathered with AI-programmed sensors detecting bird species by their songs.

The interdisciplinary goal between these student groups is to identify ongoing hazards to specific school campuses and using the birds like "the canary in the coalmine" to alert community leaders. Each student group intends to bring their project findings to local science and engineering competitions. Data collected by the PurpleAir sensors will be readily available to the public and used in future courses from Computer Science, AP Environmental Science, and  Zoology to see how Effingham County changes over time. This grant will become a generational investment for students who want to seek solutions to real-world issues using citizen science technology.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
