This project aims to provide middle school students with tools necessary to engage in local environmental research on the Watercress Darter habitat located in the Roebuck Springs neighborhood of Birmingham, AL. The Watercress Darter is an endangered species located only in Jefferson County, Alabama and just a couple miles from the school. 15 students will be collecting data on soil health and water quality. They will investigate discrepancies in ecosystem quality and aim to determine the causes. Student researchers will present their findings to the school population and community, bringing awareness of the Watercress Darter and to local factors that can damage the habitat of the Watercress Darter. At the end of the research project, students will present their findings at the Alabama Youth Sustainability Summit. This opportunity will allow students to gain real life experiences as ecologists and agents of change in their communities.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
