Nisqually River Foundation

$5,000

Nisqually River Foundation, in Olympia, Washington, in partnership with South Sound GREEN and the Chehalis Basin Education Consortium, requests $5,000.00 to support a Student GREEN Congress. At this event, 500 student delegates will represent the over 4,000 students from 30 schools throughout the Nisqually, Deschutes, and Chehalis Watersheds engaged in water quality monitoring- testing for dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrates, pH, and temperature.


Through connecting their data to salmon, students will build the foundation for understanding how water quality impacts a keystone species with significant cultural, economic, and ecological impacts. Their data will be central to student research as individuals and classrooms select eight delegates per class to attend Student GREEN Congress during March 2027. These delegates will create presentations about their water quality site, test results, and proposed action projects to benefit water quality.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
