Public Health Literacy seeks a $1,500 YLACES research grant to launch "HEALTH MAP: Miami Youth Air & Pollution Investigators," engaging 30 middle and high school students (grades 6-12) in hands-on environmental health research. Student researchers will investigate hyperlocal heat disparities, tree canopy cooling effects, and mosquito habitat distribution across their school campus using professional monitoring equipment. All data will be publicly shared through PurpleAir, GLOBE Observer, and a student-created website, culminating in a community research symposium reaching 200+ families and local health officials. This project directly addresses Miami's childhood asthma rates (50% above state average) and urban heat disparities documented by University of Miami research, empowering youth as community scientists while contributing actionable data to local decision-makers.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
