This project will equip 6th graders at Sant Bani School with PocketLab Air sensors, enabling them to conduct atmospheric research comparing the extreme meteorology of Mount Washington to global giants like Mount Everest and local peaks such as Mount Kearsarge. Currently, a borrowed equipment model restricts research. Transitioning to permanent ownership of sensors ensures equal opportunity and accessibility, allowing students to work in collaborative groups of 3–4 with dedicated, full-time access to the technology. Students will use world maps and real-time air quality data to visualize and compare the global distribution of climate patterns, directly connecting backyard data from local peaks to the atmospheric conditions found on the world’s highest mountains.
Students will synthesize their research into posters and interactive displays for the Mount Washington Observatory Museum, reaching over 100,000 summer visitors. By asking "Why do these data points matter?", our students will gain a deeper understanding of air quality and climate issues and learn how human actions affect the natural world. Outside of the project, these sensors will also serve as a permanent school-wide resource, available for all 120 students to borrow for science and geography units, expanding impact far beyond one grade level.
