Toledo Zoo and Aquarium

In 2026, the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium will host a Student Research Symposium serving more than 700 students in grades 3–12 from across Northwest Ohio. 


Students will present original research projects focused on environmental and STEM topics, including investigations conducted on school prairie habitats and through community science platforms. Participants will engage in peer-to-peer review and receive feedback from STEM professionals, fostering scientific communication skills, confidence, and curiosity. 


A $5,000 grant from YLACES will support transportation reimbursement and support for schools with limited resources, ensuring equitable access and a shared sense of belonging. The symposium promotes environmental literacy, student voice, and collaboration among schools, universities, and community partners.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
