West Anniston Foundation is requesting a grant for the purchase of IAQ Purple Air Monitors, supplies for DIY IAQ filters, radon kits and P.M.2.5 sensors. The LEAD HEROES is an out of school time STEM focused extended learning opportunity focused on environmental health literacy based upon EPA's IAQ Air Cleaning Allies and Clean Air Superheroes Defeat Radon. The LEAD HEROES will be responsible for developing a research question around the impacts of outdoor air quality vs. indoor air quality. They will observe how interventions such as DIY IAQ monitors can help improve air quality over 4 weeks. The youth will engage in hands-on learning through monitoring home IAQ hotspots (kitchen during cooking, bedroom overnight) with portable sensors, comparing day time vs. night time data, and outdoor data.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
