West Frederick Middle School Eco Brigade

Our school is located in an urban setting in a local park with a tributary to the Monocacy, Potomac, and Chesapeake Bay. We would like to carry out air and water investigations. We plan on purchasing three air quality sensors to track air quality. We will be sharing and comparing our data with Walkersville Middle, which is classified as a country setting. Carol Creek runs through our park. Students will gather data on nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen levels before and after community clean-ups and initiate investigations. The Eco Brigade project will encourage student-led environmental research. The results will be shared with the community and used to support our application to be recognized as a Maryland Green School.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
