DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology
Slovakia
Grant amount:
$1,500
We will equip 5 GLOBE Teams with tools to investigate microplastics in natural waters - near their school. Students involved in the GLOBE program will examine water samples and analyze them for microplastics during the spring and autumn seasons in rivers, lakes, and artificial reservoirs.
There are currently around 1500 pupils aged 8-18 years who are engaged in scientific activities at different levels. Pupils will work with a teacher trained by a university professor and an experienced GLOBE trainer.
Microplastics is a highly topical subject that motivates pupils to explore the environment in greater depth. We try to link scientific (exploratory) knowledge about water pollution to behavior change in pupils. The results of the pupils' projects will be presented at a national research conference and evaluated in collaboration with experts from the GLOBE Slovakia Science Council and universities, which motivates pupils to continue their studies and pursue STEM.
