Ecohumanity Development Initiative (ECOHDI)

The Ecohumanity Development Initiative (ECOHDI) is requesting $1,500 to launch the Degema Coastal Water Sentinel Project, a citizen science initiative targeting 120 secondary school students (Grades 7–12) in the oil-impacted coastal creeks of Rivers State, Nigeria. 


Led by a Fisheries scientist from the University of Port Harcourt, this project equips youth with professional-grade hydrology kits to monitor critical water parameters—including pH, dissolved oxygen, and salinity—standardized under the GLOBE Program protocols. 


By transforming local students into environmental researchers, we aim to bridge the data gap in the Niger Delta, providing real-time aquatic health reports that support both global climate research and local fishing community livelihoods. This initiative creates a sustainable "Scientific Hub" at our headquarters on No. 3 Farm Road, where data collected from the field is analyzed and uploaded to the GLOBE international database. 


The project not only fosters STEM literacy among 120 direct participants but also impacts over 2,500 community members through data-driven environmental research and awareness.

About YLACES:

Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists assists and rewards the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to the understanding of our environment through recognition and financial reward programs.

Grants range from equipment and supplies for taking environmental measurements to recognition and support for students presenting their research projects and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching.
