This project will engage 60 Junior Secondary School students from six schools in Kwara State in citizen science research to investigate how land cover influences mosquito diversity and population using the GLOBE Observer.
Students aged 12–15 will be trained to use the GLOBE Observer mobile application to document mosquito breeding habitats and classify land cover types using standardized protocols (Mosquito Habitat Mapper and MUC).
Students will collect georeferenced field observations, identify mosquito larvae, and document environmental conditions across different areas. We are requesting funds to purchase mosquito sampling kits, clip-on magnification lenses, safety glasses, larval collection pipettes and dippers, containers and vials, and thermometers.
The project will integrate environmental science education, ecological research, and public health awareness while empowering students to contribute real scientific data relevant to mosquito-borne disease risk in Nigeria.
