Grant amount:
$1,330
We will implement a student-led environmental research project titled "Youth Citizen Scientists Monitoring Air Pollution in Urban Schools" in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
With a grant of $1,330, the project will engage 90 secondary school students (30 per school) from Gongola Mboto, Buguruni, and Majani ya Chai Secondary Schools to conduct hands-on research on urban air pollution. Students will use portable PM2.5 air quality sensors to collect data in and around their school environments, identify pollution sources such as traffic and waste burning, and analyze patterns in air quality over time.
Students will produce research reports and present their findings to peers, teachers, and community members. The project will be implemented in collaboration with science teachers and environmental experts, including partners from Ardhi University, ensuring scientific rigor and mentorship.
By enabling students to initiate, conduct, and present real environmental research, the project will strengthen scientific thinking, increase awareness of air pollution and its health impacts, and contribute locally relevant environmental data to the broader community.
