Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the YLACES-supported 2021 in-person GLOBE student research symposia (SRS) were canceled. Thanks to the ingenuity and creativity of two GLOBE Partners and support from YLACES and other funders, two virtual SRS’s were successfully held in the spring of 2021. YLACES hopes to continue supporting such initiatives in future grant cycles.

On April 30 and May 1, 2021, the Earth System Science Collaborative (CA Strong)* and Purdue University hosted a virtual SRS with more than 75 students from 14 schools in California, Indiana, Michigan, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Student researchers presented 25 research projects to and received mentoring and reviews from 26 scientists from across the country. The theme of the SRS was data literacy and recognition awards sponsored by YLACES were given to student teams for accomplishments in the areas of data source, data use, data visualization and data analysis/interpretation.

On May 13, 2021, the Midwest GLOBE Partners** hosted a virtual Midwest regional SRS for more than 80 students from 11 schools. These students presented 25 projects to 15 scientists and subject matter experts who provided feedback on the students’ work. Scientists, local officials, and parents attended the virtual event.

YLACES funding was used to support five teachers selected at random to purchase GLOBE equipment for their schools. The teacher winners were Laurie Fox - Butternut School - Butternut, Wisconsin; Melody Tsapranis - Navarre Elementary School - Toledo, Ohio; Molly Duhamel - Otsego Junior High School - Bowling Green, Ohio; Janene Smith - St. Peter’s Jr. & Senior High School and Abbie Smith - Millcreek-West Unity (Hilltop) School - West Unity, Ohio.
